The Toronto Star op-ed reflects on the tensions of a values-led foreign policy.Bob Rae, Professor of Public Policy, examines the difficulties of placing Canadian values at the forefront of foreign policy in light of Saudi Arabia’s response to a tweet by Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the imprisonment of activist Raif Badawi’s sister, Samar Badawi.
“Public diplomacy has its hazards, but the answer is not to flinch from engagement, either publicly or privately. It is not about being stubborn, moralizing, or self righteous, or asking the world to be just like us.
It is about building a world, step by painful step, based on law and respect for dignity. Ultimately that is where our values and our interests coincide.”
